That's because depending on the type of IT job you have it is all about what you know. You have that 6 figure it job because you are probably a pretty big geek when it comes to IT stuff.
I have a friend who didn't even go to college and got a job as a web developer making 75k + bonus. However, he is an outright geek when it comes to web stuff.
These days, degrees are worth less and less. It is all about selling yourself in the interview. If you know your skills then you can easily sell yourself in the interview to justify not having a degree.
The critical thing is having a good education (having a degree doesn't necessarily mean you have a good education) and excellent skills.
