I've audited classes all the time, for fun, and for free.

Harder to sneak into a small semimar-type class though--for those,
I'd definitely request the professor's permission.

Have hardly ever seen "attendance" taken, since high school anyway.

Due to budget cuts at my Alma mater (thank you, State of Texas), my professors became really strict with attendance to the point where it was outlined in our syllabi that if you missed more than 3 classes without an excuse, your final grade would drop by a letter. More than 5, and the professor would pull you aside to suggest dropping the course.

My school did this to cut costs -- and classes. Smaller departments like mine (Interdisciplinary Studies) and languages are still suffering from it.
