...from the point of view of academics/research, not SAT score/selectivity for undergrads (sorry UVa!) In terms of clusters, I'd say:

Top three: UC Berkeley, UCLA, Michigan - Ann Arbor

Next cluster (in no particular order): UC San Diego, Texas - Austin, Wisconsin - Madison, maybe Washington-Seattle.

Why did you leave out East coast schools?

It seems to me that that the Northeast/Bos-Wash corridor - where private universities are more entrenched - means they aren't the powerhouses they are in California, the Midwest etc.

I would just go with Pitt Chick's link instead of our opinions..... Page 24. I was surprised to find Ohio State as #1.

That is odd. Because OSU sucks .
Also odd to see UVa so low. Usually, the top 3 public schools are Berkeley, Michigan, and UVa in no particular order. With UCLA and UNC filling out the top 5. They've got 4 of those in the top 6, but UVa is way down there. Weird.

But then if you look at page 16, Top American Research Universities, Michigan is the top public school. Again, UVa is very low there too.

I'm sure I'd understand more if I read the whole methodology, but jumping to conclusions is more fun.

UVa has a certain "brand" but it's not anywhere close to being in the top 3 public universities in the US.

Here's one way to look at it, based on USNWR rankings of graduate schools, the number with top 10 and top 20 programs. I've limited to 16 subjects - 12 in the liberal arts and sciences (biological sciences, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, physics, sociology, economics, English, history, political science, and psychology plus philosophy from the Philosophical Gourmet rankings), as well as engineering, medicine (research), law and business:

University of California, Berkeley: 14 top 10, 15 top 20 (no medical school)
University of Michigan, Ann Arbor: 10 top 10, 16 top 20
University of California, Los Angeles: 6 top 10, 15 top 20
University of Wisconsin, Madison: 3 top 10, 12 top 20
University of Texas, Austin: 1 top 10, 12 top 20
University of California, San Diego: 1 top 10, 9 top 20
University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign: 5 top 10, 7 top 20
University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill: 2 top 10, 7 top 20
University of Washington, Seattle: 1 top 10, 6 top 20
University of Minnesota, Twin Cities: 1 top 10, 5 top 20
University of Virginia: 2 top 10, 4 top 20

Virginia is more in league with Rutgers or Maryland than it is with Michigan or Berkeley. The 2nd cluster after the "big 3" (Berkeley, UCLA, Michigan) should also include UIUC.

Epic fail.....seriously. Did someone get their panties in a bunch because they weren't accepted to UVA? Typically that type of conversation is reserved for those that couldn't get into Duke. Nice to see people are branching out to other institutions...

No never applied there, and you seem to be under the impression that university quality is solely measured by undergrad selectivity.

Rutgers and Maryland BTW also have 4 top 20 grad programs...hardly a major difference with UVa. Virtually everything at Michigan is in the top 20 and many are in the top 10, that certainly can't be said of UVa.

I agree, it does seem like the OP has an axe to grind with UVa.

Also while Ohio State is not on par with the top ~5 publics, it's definitely in that next tier.

I just think it's interesting how many times I've heard it repeated that UVa is one of the "three public Ivys" when in fact many schools in so-called "flyover" country like UIUC, Wisconsin - Madison and Texas - Austin are actually much stronger institutions overall. My guess it has to do with history as well as it being a school that's on the radar for many in the Bos-Wash corridor which colors their perceptions.

Ohio State I think would be in the same cluster as Indiana, Rutgers, Maryland and UVA.
