Has anyone ever taken any of these continuing education internet classes? You have to register through a college. I am thinking of trying one and wanted to know if it was worth it.
I took 2 or 3 several years ago. They are ok, but in my opinion you could do just as well reading a book. The classes I took had pretty much no instructor interaction. I did learn, but it seemed the course was like a mass produced frozen dinner.
Look into MOOCS (massively online classes) like Coursera and Udacity. Chances are your subject of interest can be found there. They are free and most are exceptional. Coursera courses are generally taught by college professors from big name universities. On the flip side, you will be in a class with thousands of classmates, but you can definitely find classroom interaction if you seek it.
It really kind of depends on your goals IMO. As DanielWayne mentioned you can pick up skills through things like Coursera, Udacity among other online learning portals. You can even learn to program with things like Codecademy.com. The nice ting about Udacity and Coursera are they offer classes in conjunction with major universities like Standford and Yale
If you're just looking to pick up a skill here or there or are just interested in learning about something any of these options is probably a good idea. Some other options for picking up singular skills that you can combine together to get a pretty solid education are:
If you're more interested in continuing your education in a more formal format, consider a reputable university that offers an online degree component, like the Colorado State University system. I think their "Global" campus offers accredited degrees, that should be just as valuable as a more traditional degree. It's not cheap, or easy to get into, at least not as easy as for profit schools, but is another option.
