Most professors do not care if you do or not, and if they have a preference it is stated the first class or in the syllabus.
I personally think that it makes you look like a more involved student and can be helpful refreshing your memory about material during class discussions.
I have had many professors claim that textbooks were required and necessary to bring to each class...the only courses I took that actually utilized the textbooks in class were calc I & II and a 300-level math course on proofs and conjectures. All other courses were taught from the board or Power Point.
I was never told to bring them to class but I brought them anyway as I would often refer to them if something wasn't clear that the professor was discussing. I've had several classes where the textbooks were not used and I could have made it the whole semester without having the textbooks.
My textbook is heavy, but I need students to have it in class, and I tell them so from the beginning (and often). I do not expect anyone to have it on day one.
