Which one matters more? Which subjects are GPA killers?
GPA killers? In college, surely science, or maybe math which most math classes are in the 5 credit zone. Do poorly in Calculus (which is 5 credits here at my Uni) and you're screwed. Really, any class with a lot of credit weight, in case you're bad at it.
Rank and GPA also are unique. I graduated high school with a 3.2 GPA. Surely not the best, but I was in the top 20% of my class that got me a full ride to CC if I took it. In that case, the rank mattered more. But I think in most cases GPA matter more.
This thread also doesn't make sense. If I took Calculus, that would be my GPA killer. If my husband took it, he would be knock it out of the park. A subject one won't do well in will be a GPA killer.
Rank and GPA go hand in hand... one is not better than the other.
The higher your GPA, the higher your class rank.
In the high school 2 of my kids attended class rank was a better gauge on how well they were doing since this place handed out grades (back 10+ years ago, not now) like candy. Parents were happy with little Johnny's grades and all the teachers that adhered to this were considered great. Never mind that the ACT scores were well below state average and a huge % of students attending state schools had to take remedial classes. Needless to say for entrance into college, a kid's GPA from this school were not a real good measure of their readiness.
GPA killers in high school or college often are the science and math classes in general since students need to apply themselves on a daily basis. Kids that are trying to cruise through school will get nailed with these classes.
