Depending on your course of study and involvement in clubs and activities, you may not have time to work.
My youngest is still in college, and he is carrying 18 credits this semester, in in the Honors program, is involved in the student government, and participates in some other campus clubs and volunteer organizations. He would have no time to add a job to his schedule. Besides, he knows his main "job" is to maintain his GPA to keep his academic scholarships, which pay for most of his education.
So bottom line is no, it would not be out of the norm to not have a job during the school year. But do more than blow off class and go party all the time! Find a balance.
