I'm a Psychology major (yep), who minored in Business Administration because I felt like I needed to pair it with something useful. My advisor suggested that I look into IO Psychology, but that requires more school. I need to start paying off my loans when I graduate, so sinking into more debt probably isn't the best idea. I also don't know how "in demand" those jobs are.
Is there any hope for people like me? or am I pretty much doomed to be working dead end jobs because I chose a bad major?
Psychology is one of the most popular majors at many universities. If you expect to get any decent paying job related to psychology in any way, you need more education. If you are okay with getting any sort of office job that just requires a degree then you might be okay. Keep in mind that there are many graduates holding psychology degrees since it is so popular. This means you will be competing for jobs.
Psych usually requires more schooling but some psych majors go into human resources or similar areas that might not require further schooling. If you want to get into counseling or something along those lines, you will need a masters degree at least. There are programs that help with loan forgiveness if you commit to working in an underserved area though.
I would apply for jobs that require a degree in Business Administration. Even though you have a minor, there is enough demand for finance type people and a lack of applicants that someone will hire you. I have looked through many resumes and if it said Business Administration degree with a degree in psychology, that would be enough for me to take a closer look especially if I only have 5 to 10 applicants.
His degree isn't in business administration; it's a minor.
