as far as financial / FAFSA is concerned... getting married is about the only way to be financially independent before age 26.
Even tho my own kids were financially independent from age 12, had their own car titles / policies, apartment leases, homes, and GONE from home by the day they reached age 18, .... FAFSA still considered them 'dependents' till age 26. Thus, they got no Federal dough for college. They just had to pay their own way, however that worked, I never asked. They had jobs and got loans AFAIK.
