You guys probably know this already, but it could not be said enough. College textbooks are an insane rip-off. The worst part is, if you choose to buy them in the campus store, they are extremely marked up. I'm not even talking about something like 15% markups, not even 100% markups. I'm talking about, that college textbooks on campus can cost like 5x or 10x as much as buying them online! It's ridiculous. It's a very very shameless money grab. I think universities realize that Amazon is starting to steal some of their customers, so now they getting smart. They sell "coverless" books now, that are supposed to be cheaper, the catch is that once you open them you cannot return them so stupid

Didn't you pay attention when they taught the rules of college textbook selection?

Each year a different textbook must be selected, so the students cannot sell or buy used ones.

If a different text is not available, a new edition will suffice.

Most college bookstores also do an active business in buying back used textbooks, and reselling them at used-book prices. Check that out. I've never run into new textbook prices that are 5 times the online price, though.

I think you can get copies online much cheaper. However you either have to read them online, or print them out.

Yes, some textbooks can be $200 or more. They definitely aren't worth that. It's also possible to teach some college courses, without a textbook, or with an older edition of the textbook (so the student could buy used to save money). But most professors are very unsympathetic about the financial aspect of textbooks, however, and if the book cost a thousand dollars, they would just tell you to cough up the money for it, or drop out of the class.

Rent your textbooks. They have most books and it's a heck of a lot cheaper.
Try chegg.com, amazon.com, bookrenter.com. Just do a google search. Renting can save you a couple hundred dollars a semester.
Good luck!

My uni doesn't, it just offers the option to "Rent" a book, which often times would still be 85% of the original cost. Tbf the textbooks that are 5-6 times cheaper are usually the "Alternate Versions", but Alternate Versions are the same thing just with a different cover. My Stats textbook that went for 100+ dollars in the bookstore, I got the same thing online for 20

I feel your pain. I usually rented them - but of course not from the college store.

Amazon, etc.
