A university in Michigan is offering an unusual degree — in marijuana.
Northern Michigan University in Marquette began its medical plant chemistry program this semester, with about a dozen students in the first class, the Detroit Free Press reported . The program combines chemistry, biology, botany, horticulture, marketing and finance.
I'll say what I said on another forum. The degree is not in marijuana. The degree is in what the degree name says: medicinal plant chemistry. It covers marijuana, but it also covers other herbal medicines and natural products.
you can put it next to the airbrush art degree where you paint the plants
make it a degree in eastern/holistic medicine and offer it to hippies
It's basically a pharmaceutical chemistry degree. Plants are used all the time to produce medications and natural, household and personal care products. With marijuana, specifically, there is a lot of research on its medicinal capabilities. Many states have legalized medical marijuana. Some states have only legalized cannabis oil.
It's a budding industry. It's going to continue to grow.
My bet is that graduates will get high paying jobs and will be very successful, especially the medicinal marijuana field. These graduates will become experts in the field and they will help remove the stigma of party/get high and continue to help marijuana be recognized as a reputable remedy to lots of diseases, pain and illnesses, with fewer side affects and better results compared to traditional Rx drugs that are prescribed today.
There's a LOT of money to be had in medicinal marijuana. Pharmacuetical industry will either join in to get some of the money, or they'll lobby strongly against it because it's a threat to their future sales for other medicines(OTC or prescription).
These graduates will likely write books, do research, become lobbyists, CEOs, researchers, etc. Some might become attorneys that specialize in this field. Some will start their own companies and become billionaires. Maybe it reaches the supreme court at some point and maybe some of the attorneys arguing the case (or experts used in the case) will be graduates of this program.
There's clearly money in it, just like with craft brews and other things that make people feel good. Hint: if it makes people feel good, then there is probably good money to be made on it.
Perhaps you haven't heard of the numerous states that have legalized medical and recreational marijuana.
Except for the fact that schools are federally funded... And marijuana is federally illegal.
