I am a med student in europe that will be applying in the future for a medical residency in the US.
No matter what the state is the usual salary is about $45 000 per year. I 've been told that due to this it wouldnt be a great idea going to NY or CA as they re pretty expensive states and this money wouldnt be enough.

Could u suggest any states that this salary is sufficient for me to live a comfortable life? Don't know how possible it is but i'd prefer a state with a warm climate!

Is any of these cities affordable :
-Baltimore, Maryland
-Durham, N.Carolina
-Philadelphia
-Birmingham

Thanks

1. Birmingham, Alabama.
2. Durham, North Carolina.
3. Baltimore, Maryland.
4. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Ranked in order of how affordable each state is

Plus, both Phildelphia and Baltimore have moderately cold winters.

Nevada always needs doctors. It's more affordable than ever.

Sorry to rain on the parade, but if you are able to secure a residency, a "comfortable life" will be the least of your concerns. south Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Texas, Arizona are but a few other states with excellent medical schools and acute care centers.

California's cities and New York City are expensive - not the whole states.

I second killer2021, Texas is HIGHLY affordable & is home to the largest medical center in the U.S. The Texas Medical Center is the largest medical center in the world with one of the highest densities of clinical facilities for patient care, basic science, and translational research, I suggest you visit www.tmc.edu. Good luck on your decision.

I'd like to add that in expensive cities (like New York) many of the residency programs have housestaff housing that comes at a huge discount relative to the market rate.

Again, I wouldn't necessarily choose your residency by climate. You want the BEST possible program that will admit you.
