My younger brother is considering pursuing a social psychology degree. I know 6 people that have psych degrees and none of them work in anything closely related the field. They either found work that was similar to social work that didnt pay anything or could find nothing at all.

Does anyone hear have a social psych degree and know anyone? If so, what kind of positions are out there?

I think that's one of those degrees if you want to work in the field you need to pursue a graduate degree after undergrad...like so many liberal arts degrees.

You're referring to social psychology and not social work, I presume, because those two fields are not similar at all. Social psychologists are almost always academics, doing research at a university and teaching. It is not a "clinical"/direct patient contact type career.

From the APA (American Psychological Association) website:

"Social psychologists study how a person's mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people. They are interested in all aspects of interpersonal relationships, including both individual and group influences, and seek ways to improve such interactions. For example, their research helps us understand how people form attitudes toward others, and when these are harmful—as in the case of prejudice—suggests ways to change them.

Social psychologists are found in a variety of settings, from academic institutions (where they teach and conduct research), to advertising agencies (where they study consumer attitudes and preferences), to businesses and government agencies (where they help with a variety of problems in organization and management)."

If you mean social work, that's a different kettle of fish altogether.

No, definitely not social work. I believe he is wanting to pursue the academic side of it by either teaching or being a school psychologist.

Maybe you need to clarify with him. Because school psychology and social psychology are completely different things.

If social psychology is what he wants to pursue, then we would also have job opportunities with government agencies and research organizations (places like Abt Associates, Mathematica, RAND, etc).

From my research, school psychologist is one of the top jobs that people with social psychology degrees get. You have to go the extra step and get your certification but from what I have read it is pretty common for people with social psychology degrees to go into being a school psychologist. I have read that probably a half a dozen different places.
