Discussions of diversity have come up here from time to time and I once mentioned that Fountain/Security/Widefield was distinguished for best representing the diversity of the U.S. in the past.

Well, the Gazette had a reference to that today:
"Fountain has the distinction of being the United States' millenium city because it best symbolized the overall composition of America. Fountain is the most accurate representation of the American "melting pot." Fountain was chosen after a Queens College sociologist crunched Census Bureau statistics in an effort to find the one city in the country that best represented the population Make-up of the United States."

The Gazette article linked to this source of various Colorado trivia: Colorado State Facts - 50States.com

Interesting how fountain also has a high crime rate and is a rather undesirable place to live.

Are you possibly thinking of the wrong place? The city of Fountain's crime rate is lower than Colorado Springs (about 189-200 (saw a few different values)/100000 vs. Colorado Springs 378/100000, Manitou Springs 247/100000, Greeley 351/100000 Canon City 283/100000, Cripple Creek 559/100000 and Pueblo 655/100000 according to citydata). It is well below U.S. average in every crime rate. Fort Collins and Loveland according to citydata are close matches for crime rate.

Have you ever really been in Fountain? There are some pretty amazing newer home developments there, in addition to a lot of beautiful horse property, and there are a lot of people who consider it a desirable place to live.

Never heard that Fountain was a higher crime area, we've had posters on here over the years who swear the place is fine and home to thousands of Army and Air Force families.

Now the area around Fountain Blvd in COLO SPGS is a different story, that area is not the best, and it's easy for people to confuse the town of Fountain with street by the same name.

That doesn't surprise me at all. Its proximity to Ft Carson and Shriever AFB along with some well established and newly developed home areas, leads to a broad range of reasons for a broad range of people to call it home.
