Ok my son is 15 and wants to try some target shooting. I don't shoot but I have a friend that's willing to take him out every now and then. Anyways, I was just wondering what we have to do and get for him so he can legally shoot. Thanks for any responses . By the way he wants to do Pistol shooting if that makes any difference. Thanks.

There's nothing that says he CANT legally shoot anything, so long as an adult is present.

I'm amazed that some people still think you have to have some sort of licence or something to own or fire a weapon. It's your second ammendment right (Officially handed down by the Supreme Court as of Friday).

Some democrats, Mainly Hillary, WOULD like everyone to HAVE such a licence to own any firearm.

Anyways, yes, So long as your son is in the presence of an adult that is LEGALLY permitted to own a firearm (i.e., no one with any felonies or anyone on disability) then there aren't any special laws you need to follow.

Default For a 15 year old first time shooter......

I'd reccomend a SIg Sauer, a Kahr, or a Glock, chambered in 9mm luger. They are well built guns that will last a lifetime if cared for.

Plan on spending at least $500 on a good weapon. Don't be tempted to buy one of those cheap $200 guns. They are junk and will give your son an unpleasant shooting experience.

No, there is no licence needed. It's not neccessary at all. I mean you need a licence to go hunting, but that's it.

I assume he's only target shooting, so really there aren't any special things to do, other than making sure it's legal to shoot where you are.

Guns are not cars. You don't need a licence to shoot one.

The only thing he NEEDS is a compentent instuctor, and hearing and eye protection.

Do yourself a favor, and enroll him in a competitive shooting club, or class. He will benenfit greatly. ANd you will have piece of mind knowing he can safely and properly handle a firearm.

Just remember, there's no such thing as an "accidental discharge" It's always a "negligent discharge"

With todays modern firearms, the chance of a gun going off by itself is slim to none. Most of the cases where you hear about someone "accidently" shooting him of herself, is because they were too dumb to make sure the gun was unloaded before cleaning it.

First, I would recommend you and your son take a firearm safety class. Paradise gun shop on West Colordao Ave gives one of the best ones I have ever seen. I do quite a bit of shooting, mainly pistol. My wife expressed a desire to go shooting with me. Being a smart husband I know good and well never to try and teach my wife anything so I signed us both up for their class. Absolutly top notch class with very knowledge NRA certified master instructors. I am 37 and have been shooting since I was in grade school. I learned a great deal from this class and am glad I took it. My wife who has never shot before loved the class and now goes shoting with me. Google "Paradise Sales" it is the first listing to pop up.

Honestly, if you both take this class they will answer any and all question you could possible have. Plus they have loaner guns you can use for the class. This is good because you wont have to waste money before you really know what you doing.

Oh yes, Paradise is a nice gun store as well. Nice selection of vintage weapons.

Picked up my Mauser and Yugo M44 there.
