I am looking to move and I see rents are dirt cheap (many studios for around $400). Why?? Are these bad areas? I was on rent.com (which seems to have a lot of listings and is a good site).

I love nature and cold weather, I think I could be very happy there.

Where are these $400 apartments located?

What areas are you looking at, where are you currently? Colorado Springs has a wide variety of prices... you're not looking at the Broadmoor area, that's for sure. Many areas are way cheaper than CS, and can easily consider CS expensive.

just keep in mind.... wherever rents are low; wages are likely to be as well.

True, but I only make $12.00 an hour now (bookkeeper), so I think I should be able to match that?

Sorry, I don't know the areas. On the apartment site, I just type in the city, so maybe they are in bad areas, I don't know.

So what are some cheaper areas of Colorado that are nice? How is denver for a single bookkeeper?

I can say that although many people sing the praises of Colorado Springs with its beautiful natural surroundings and "mild" weather, I don't think it is that desirable for the majority of the human race.

I have lived in Albuquerque and Colorado Springs and both areas have the same rents, so I don't think they are cheap. That's just what I am used to.

Some possible bad things about the Springs that may contribute to a lack of desirability and therefore a lower average rent are:

1. Short summers.
2. Too much wind.
3. 6-7000 feet elevation.
4. Restaurants are horrific.
5. Runt cousin of Denver.
6. Snowstorms in April.
7. Snowstorms in October.
8. Getting around town (Hills, curves, potholes, F-350's, sand on the roads, unforgiving cops writing tickets at the bottom of hills, stoplights need coordination.)

But if you're the type of renegade that hates government and city life, the Springs may fit you with it's rugged beauty and homesteader feel.

Hahaha ^^ Nice post! Having lived in Corrales, I hear you! AND having moved to CoS via Cleveland, I would not say it is not cheap, except maybe gasoline and natural gas.
