Hi

This may be a strange question?!

I have been reading up on Colorado Springs and I am curious to know if those that love there feel there are too many religous groups in CS, are they a problem, too much in your face etc... Everyone is entitled to their own beleifs but when I read the sentance below from wikipedia, I was wonerding just how it affected day to day life of those who choose not to be in the groups.

Thanks

At one time Colorado Springs was counted to be the national headquarters for 81 different religious organizations, earning the city the tongue-in-cheek nickname "the Evangelical Vatican

This issue has been beaten to death here...I believe that you will find that the search function works well to address this and many other questions you might have.

There do seem to be a lot of churches in Colorado Springs but, considing that these places can be modeled as businesses, in order for them to survive there must be enough demand.

So I guess no, there aren't too many.

Doesn't affect people who chose not to "patronize" these "businesses".

As said, lots of information to be had on the subject here.

Okay then, as a non-Christian with a very Christian family, I can tell you, it's not as big deal a here as many think.

Heck, I have friends of all flavors of religion or non-religion (or just plain spiritual in their own right). If my family and I can come to an agreement about my non-Christian beliefs, anyone that would get in your face needs a smack-down.

I agree. It's certainly here and available if that's what you're seeking. But otherwise, it doesn't seem to be too intrusive (although that may be easy for me to say since I'm not a member of the groups the church discriminates against).

That picture pretty much sums it up for me. That's a riot. Great example of Christian tolerance.

As one of Jehovah's Witnesses, and a devout Bible Student myself, let me just say that I totally agree with what you're all saying about religious hypocrisy. Most so-called 'christians' may speak all they want about being good and serving god, but they give such a POOR witness about the message they claim to teach through their narrow attitudes and vile behavior. 'Stupid' is indeed a word found in the bible, and it usually applies to people like the ones in the photo above. (Ecc 5:2,3)

That is why I've voluntarily disassociated myself from the churches that I was taught to be part of as a child. The good news should be shared with warmth and kindness to those who are interested, not forced upon those who are not.

That said, I think it's pretty easy to avoid such ones around here or anywhere as long as you're not actively antagonizing them or seeking them out for debate.

As an atheist I find it heartening to hear that, I truly do. Much more harm than good comes from browbeating a person into believing something that may not be for them. I very very much appreciate you keeping your good news to yourself, probably a lot more than you know. Speaking only for myself, I do not believe in magic, and do not pass judgement on anyone that does.

As far as the original post, I have't experienced all of the different religious groups, though I am sure they are there. From what I have seen, it is something you can choose to be a part of or not, without being painted as an outcast of some sort. I have no doubt that there may be some pockets of fundamentalists about, probably more than in other areas of the country, I can only assume that with time spent in the city you will learn where these places are and decide for yourself if you are interested in them.

It is my view that many religious groups are no bad thing, as long as they are a variety of different religions and beliefs. It's when the groups all think and believe the same things is when I get scared. I don't know how diverse the Springs area is regarding different religions, especially non-western religions.

My father won't even come to my house up north cause he thinks all my neighbors are FOTF followers.

It's simply not true though. Most of my neighbors aren't even religious, let alone ever go to church.

You're welcome. Of course, I can't promise that I'll never happen to show up at your door one morning in a suit, but I (as well as any other JW) will always respect your right to say 'I'm not interested'.

Here's a straight-forawrd article about how to 'get rid' of Jehovah's Witnesses, but I think it would apply to other envangelical groups too:
