I was driving on I70 to Evergreen when the fires were in the news 2 weeks ago, and witnessed cars with Iowa and Ohio plates flicking cigarettes out the window. I honked at them too.

I agree that we should probably look at tossing butts out the window in the context of fire danger, but enforcement of such a law would be incredibly scant because a cop would actually have to witness the crime taking place.

Take a look at our roadsides and you'll see how ineffective litter laws are. In effect, this would be the same thing.

And tourists smoke. I read on the fire thread weeks ago about vehicles with TX plates tossing butts out the car window and who to call to report it.

Well I moved here from FL a few years ago, and it was insanely prolific there. I was the only one in a department of 10 that didn't. You see everyone in a gas station getting cigs.

But here it seems the opposite, 15 people at my company and nobody does. Entire apartment complexes don't allow it. Can't remember the last time I've even seen people on the streets or in gas stations buying them

What is really interesting in the Rocky Mountain states is that, while cigarette smoking is much less widespread than it used to be, the use of chewing tobacco is epidemic. Chewing tobacco used to be a habit only found in the rural areas, but I think, as a percentage of the total population, it is as high now in the metro areas as it is in the rural areas. And it certainly isn't limited to blue-collar folks working outdoors--I'm amazed at the number of white-collar office workers who chew. Most tobacco-chewers are still male, but there are more women who now chew (often using the little "bags" of chewing tobacco because it is more discrete) than one would think.

As to the whole littering issue, I think a heavy fine, say $5,000, would be great--plus maybe 14 days on a crew picking up litter. I've picked up litter as a volunteer on the Adopt-A-Highway program--it's not a fun task.

I think the poster inquired about getting the license # and calling *CSP. I don't recall if anyone had any other suggestions. That's what I'd do if I saw someone tossing cig butts - it's worth a shot. If they had the info from the call and a fire started perhaps they would have a chat with the offender.
