I have been scoping a few states for retirement which will start in a couple of years. I came across Central City and said what a cool looking town. But where are all the people? Are the stores all closed? Does someone have some insight to what's going on?
Thank you

Central City is one of only 3 cities in Colorado where gambling is allowed. It, along with neighboring Black Hawk, are filled to the brim with casinos. I dunno if I personally would want to retire there.

Gambling has tended to displace most stores in Central City, Black Hawk, and Cripple Creek. Of the three, Cripple Creek tends to still retain a lot of its basic town functions and feel without totally giving in to gambling interests. It has much more real estate than CC and BH.

To avoid gaming and have vintage Victorian feel, look at Victor. Small, not much in the way of service, but a short drive from Colorado Springs and major medical, broker services, banking, entertainment.

Any particular attraction to high mountain, pseudo ghost towns?

Central City is basically all casinos and I wouldn't imagine it would be a place many would want to live. I'd look at Nederland or Georgetown, both nearby.

Where are all the people? What's going on? Gambling. The people are in the casinos. I drive through Black Hawk and Central City often and there are always people around - definitely not a "ghost town". There aren't many stores left because it's mainly casinos.
There are some beautiful homes in the foothills surrounding Central City and Black Hawk. But you'd have to drive to Golden or Nederland for groceries, etc.
