Castle Rock property taxes/CR revenues.... (Highlands Ranch: sales, house, construction) - Colorado (CO) - City-Data Forum

Please read the following, taken from the CR website. It appears that a very small amt (only $40 on a $300k home), goes to the Town of CR....however lower down in the article, it states that their 2010 budget includes $85m in revenues.

Where is the $85m coming from?

Under the proposed budget, the Town’s property tax mill levy would decline for the 18th consecutive year. The current rate is 1.705 mills, and the proposed 2010 rate is 1.703 mills. That means the owner of a $300,000 house would pay $40.67 to the Town in property taxes for all of 2010.
In 2001, the Town’s mill levy was 3.209, meaning the rate has declined 46 percent over the past decade. The proposed 2010 budget includes $106.9 million in expenditures and $85 million in revenues. The difference would be offset by the planned use of reserves for scheduled capital projects.

The majority of Castle Rock's funds come form construction permits and retail sales tax. Very little comes from property taxes. This makes things like the outlet mall very important to the financial survival of the community. This is also way cities throughout Colorado fight tooth and nail for retail projects.

And in addition, I believe the groceries may be taxed, which is another source of income.

I can say that the snow removal in Castle Rock is VERY GOOD. When I lived in Highlands Ranch, the amount of plowing we got from DOuglas County was bare minimum ... and in Castle Rock, we get plowed even in a small cul de sac on the same say, even in very big storms.

May towns in Colorado do tax food but, Castle Rock doesn't.

Not true ... there is tax on the food.

There is a difference whether the food is prepared or not. If prepared, there is a tax.

2bindenver's right on the prepared foods. A good example is the deli department in the grocery stores such as the sandwiches, potato salad's, etc.
