Canon City is a metro of almost 50,000. Good access to the mountains and front range cities. Monthly highs in winter at 50 degrees or above.

Issue that comes up relates to the many correction facilities, the folks that visit and the stresses on the employee / neighbors. If you can ignore or deal with that, Canon City has some advantages on the competition (including real estate prices).

From my weather station here on the west side the coldest for this year was -9f amd the hottest was 100f. There of course would be variations with the temperature in other parts of town.

Hmmm... Canon City sounds nice, but the correction facilities wouldn't be nice. I'm looking into Knoxville, TN and Gainesville, GA now. Knoxville might not be very warm, but it would beat Chicago for sure. We would want to be close to hiking trails with mountain views.

Ok, it looks like Knoxville can be pretty cloudy and rainy - not nearly as many sunny days in CO. I need sunny days. It looks like Gainesville gets a little more sunny days, but still not tons. ??

The way some people talk about Colorado's climate you'd think it was French Polynesia or something.

Ok, ok, Colorado is out. I do love the mountain beauty there, but too cold. We're looking at Knoxville, Asheville, or Greenville, SC. All sound like they have a lot to do and not too far from mountain trails.

A couple of years ago in Ridgway the low was 44 below zero. I thought well, this will be fun to walk around in. It wasn't.

Colorado has more sun and more cloudless days but those southeast places are pretty sunny. Partly cloudy or cloudy for part of day and sunny for the other part was fine by me when I lived in the SE region. The sky is a theater. Rain or heavy rain comes and goes but makes the lush / diverse green landscape.

Greenville does have major company employers and a revitalizing downtown. Good option you added, though crime is bad in town or at least parts of town. (Same can be said for Knoxville and Asheville.) Suburbs crime rates tend to be better or much better. Clemson has appeal too, if it isn't too small and your neighborhood isn't crowded with students.

If you still have a curiosity about Colorado, make a couple of vacations here in next few years, summer/fall and winter. It could still be your getaway or maybe place after next or possible second future place.

It beats the pants off a winter in the Twin Cities and it's not even close. You couldn't pay me enough to endure another frigid, lousy, gray, dreary Upper Midwestern winter.
