Benadryl? It cuts out a LOT of scratching with my Cairn Terrier. He's apparently allergic to grasses because he's flea-free.

I had this problem years ago with my lab when she was about a year old..it was all caused because I switched dog food. When I went back to what she was eating before it all stopped.

Hi Sassy! My dogs had this very same problem-horrible itching, hair loss and no fleas. After multiple trips to vets and skin disease specialists, a vet friend told me that it might be mange. It's very hard to diagnose, but the vet should give your pup an injection of ivermectin (the medication in heartworm preventative) after you determine that your dog is not a breed that is sensitive to it as are collies and some white footed breeds. It cleared my dogs up within days after a year of suffering! Worked for the kitties too! Good luck!

Get an allergy test (RAST), switch to hypoallergenic food, use benadryl, and rule out mange.
