Hello all. My family and I are relocating to the Columbia area from NC in June 2012. I am looking at living in either Laxington or the Irmo/St. Andrews area. I have 2 small children and my husband will be working downtown. My oldest will be going to the 1st grade next year. We currently have about a 15-20 minute drive to work. We know that our drive will be longer - but we don't want to get stuck in traffic everyday. If it is heavy traffic but if flows - that's one thing but to have gridlock is another. Which area would you guys suggest?

IMO, go with Lexington.

West Lexington area is not a bad drive, if you are coming from the Hwy 6 or Hwy 1 or Longs Pond Rd area, going East on I-20 into Columbia, the drive is not bad at all, rarely hit any traffic jams. You Do not want live where you have to head East on 1-26 from Irmo into Columbia, that traffic can be bad

I third the Lexington suggestion. There are a lot of options for getting downtown that don't involve getting on the interstate and the worst traffic there is nothing to be concerned about. And as a bonus some of the best schools in the state are in Lexington 1.

My husband works downtown and we live in Lexington, somewhat near the I-20 exit. He takes the interstate all the way in and it only takes my husband only about 15 minutes from home to Main Street, downtown.

We just moved here from Texas and are very happy with the area and the schools (our daughter just started 1st grade.)

I live in Lexington and personally wouldn't recommend either area to anyone as I can't wait to move back to Aiken. But I would choose Lexington over Irmo as your commute on I-20 is nowhere near as hectic as I-26. We live right off Exit 55 near downtown Lex and can be in the Vista(downtown Cola) in 15-20 minutes. You may want to look at an area near Exit 61 or around Sunset Blvd. in Lexington. You say your children are just starting out and that area is zoned for the brand new Meadow Glen Elementary which opened this year. Very, very nice facility. Meadow Glen Middle opens next year and River Bluff HS opens in 2013 on that side of town. All 3 schools will be very state-of-the-art and will attract top teachers. This new school cluster is considered to be the superintendent's new "flagship" schools.

Thanks for the suggestions! I will start looking in the Lexington area now. I wanted to make sure that we didn't get into an I-40 from Durham to Raleigh situation when we moved. I don't mind a commute but sitting in stagnant traffic all day is not my idea of fun.

The Columbia side of Lexington zoned for Lexington1 schools won't be a bad commute. If you're in Irmo, you'll be closer if stay in the area zoned for Irmo HS but you can keep a 30 minute commute and get into DFHS areas. If you want to have MLS access to look at homes for sale just shoot me an email at Brandon.Hoffman@era.com and I'll be happy to set it up for you.
