Gosh, there are so many areas that would fit that description in the Columbia area. I would first find out what area you'll be working in and then list your favorite amenities in addition to schools and housing because you can find good housing and school choices in many areas of the metro.
I agree with Matt. It's too open ended to give you any helpful information.
As far as schools, the ones that most people tell me they'd like to be in (no particular order) are Lexington/Richland 5, Lexington 1, and Richland 2. You can find great newer subdivisions in any of those districts though preferred price and location would really help narrow it down.
To some degree our school information gets a bad rap because we encourage everyone to take the SAT while many states are more selective and encourage mainly just the potential college students to take the SAT.
