We're planning on moving in a few years up north (from the Tampa area.)
The Columbia area is one of our main prospects... the gf is considering going to USC.
I'll probably be working remote/from home, and she's willing to drive up 45 min, possibly an hour if we find a great house and it's worth it (we're used to commuting.) We want a place with a large lot (hopefully more than an acre) while still being affordable (less then 200k.)
We also don't mind more semi-rural areas/less crowded/smaller town type areas... obviously considering we want land.
Just doing initial research, we're able to find some houses near Camden. And it looks like it has an "old time" feel. We also notice that Camden is cooler temperature wise than Columbia and the surrounding area which is another plus. We try to research EVERYTHING... including weather as we are tired of the Florida heat.
But one thing I noticed was Camden has EXTREMELY BAD ratings when it comes to crime!

Is it really this bad?
If so, whats a good area to look in... considering what we're looking for.
Camden is really not cooler, temperature-wise, than Columbia. Maybe a half degree, on average, if that. Camden is a small town, I doubt it has that big a crime problem.
What the statistics don't tell you is that most of these smaller towns with high crime rates; the crime is condenseed into a very small area of town and is usually a crime within it's own community. What I mean by that is that there are some very poor areas in every one of these small towns. The crime is usually concentrated there. It's usually drug related. So theft/robbery to get money for drugs. Or somebody knows you have drugs so they assult him/her and take the drugs. Or your selling drugs on somebody elses "turf" and there is retaliation. It's the "thug/gangsta" mentality driven by poverty and a culture of acceptence.
Rarely does the crime expand outside of these neighborhoods. And the areas to avoid are very obvious.
