I moved to this area a couple months ago and the one thing I haven't been able to find is a good place for doughnuts. I'm used to grocery stores having large cases of doughnuts, but both publix and kroger here have a tiny selection (and walmart doughnuts aren't good). I was excited to try Dunkin' for the first time, but was very disappointed. The doughnuts were small with minimal filling.
Is there any place in the area to get big, fresh, awesome doughnuts? A bakery of some sort or something?

Tiffany's Bakery on Two Notch, the Krispy Kreme plant in Cayce. Chocolate Nirvana Bakery may have doughnuts, too. Check out the bakery at Whole Foods or Fresh Market.
Columbia seems to be more of a chain doughnut town, with the Krispy Kreme and Dunkin Donuts. I've tried various bakeries at the Fresh Market, and other grocery stores and have yet to find a really decent doughnut. I haven't tried Tiffany's yet, so maybe that is the one.
Thanks for the information! Sounds like a real doughnut shop could be a good business idea for a serious baker.
It really would be. I was in Chicago this past weekend and the donut scene is huge there. You've got The Vault, Do-rite Donuts, Glazed and Infused among others that are really taking pride in cranking out some great donuts. They all have a similar model. They are mostly located in the loop in the main business areas, and are open from early morning until mid afternoon. They have amazing recipes for classic donuts as well as daily and seasonal specials. They are made in smaller batches and once they sell out for the day, they close.
If I were to start one in Columbia, I'd put it somewhere downtown, focus on only donuts and coffee, and I'd imagine it would be successful.
i've too noticed a good donut can be hard to find. I actually prefer the ones at our local WM over the small offerings at the other area grocery stores (or Dunkin for that matter), but that doesnt say a ton. Freshly made Krispy Kreme offerings can hit the spot, but yeah I could see a small bakery with a nice variety. Had several go-to spots back in WI that i could count on for those cravings, just need to find one nearby down here. Cuz sometimes a day needs to be started with a treat!
I ran the idea by my partner. My grandfather was a baker in Newberry for many years. I remember watching him make donuts. My partner said they don't have a long shelf life. But fresh donuts and coffee in the right spot are bound to be popular.
Have you tried Main Street Bakery & Gift Shop on North Main?
