My husband and I are relocating because of work to the area. I am looking for input with regards to where to live. We are downsizing as our kids are grown but our main issue is to be in a safe area. I am seeing posts about safety and crime and want to know which areas would be better. We are flexible in terms of what area to live from Lake Carolina, Irmo, Lexington, Chapin and even as far west as Leesville. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Columbia As Far As I've Experienced is divided as the Two Notch side and the Harbison/Irmo side. It would do you good to know first which of these sides you will be working in because people (again AFAIE) rarely go out of "their side" to the other side.

This is so mostly because the routes/roads available to go from one side to the other are limited and congested during rush hour. Columbia is more functionally bisected than any town I have ever lived in.

So before you start zeroing in on a side, I would suggest you make sure you know the locations of most of your planned activities.

I’d stick with the Chapin/ballentine areas. Relatively crime free, peaceful areas

I would suggest posting the answers to the following questions before making a decision.

What is your budget? What do you enjoy doing? Where will you be working? What is your tolerance for driving?

Also, be wary of people posting one answer. There are safe and unsafe areas throughout the Columbia area, with almost all areas being safe. From someone who has lived here for 15 years, and has lived in different areas, and has friends who live all over, the 4 questions above will determine your long-term happiness.
