Hey everyone, my name is Kyle I was born and raised in Maine and really have never known different (outside of a brief 2 years in the Boston area). After discovering my Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Management doesn’t necessarily open many doors to a multitude of job opportunities around here I have decided it is time for a change and theres no better way of making that happen then by packing up and moving. I am tired of the rigorous winters here in New England and I have heard so many great things about both North and South Carolina from friends and family who have lived there I figured there would be no better place to go. That being said I’m not 100% sure where in North or South Carolina would be best for me. I am thinking (although somewhat blindly) that Columbia would be as great a place to start looking into as any. I am currently 23, ideally would like to find a job that would be related to my degree in sports although I understand those types of positions are few and far between almost regardless of where you are, so I would be willing to do something else (preferably not fast food haha) to pay the bills and what not until I got myself settled. I am not heavy into the bar scene but I do enjoy going out and being active, I go to the gym regularly, enjoy going out to see live music, etc.

With that being said can anyone tell me what Columbia might be like for a guy like me? What kind of job I might find? What kind of things there are to do? What the best way to find an apartment would be (craigslist)? I am hoping to make a trip down in the next few weeks or so to try and get a feel for things first hand I was just hoping to get some inside views prior to actually going down so I may know what to expect.

Anything and everything you might have to say would be appreciated! Thank you in advance!

It is really hard to know what type of job to say you will find here. The big employers in Columbia are insurance, health care, state and federal government, education and banking. Columbia has 8 colleges and universities so it has a very young population and you would fit in well as far as your age is concerned. In terms of sports-related jobs, you might be able to find a job with the USC Athletics Department in some capacity. Also, USC has a degree in sports management so there may be a place for you on the academic side of things, too. The cost of living here is relatively low so you certainly should be able to find a position that you can support yourself with.

Apartments are plentiful and I would check out The State Newspaper's website, Craigslist and pickup an apartment finder when you visit. Columbia is in a good location for outdoor activities with Congaree National Park, Lake Murray and 2 state parks within a 20-25 minute drive of downtown and three rivers (kayaking, fishing, etc.) adjacent to downtown. Columbia is also less than a 2 hour drive to either the mountains or the beach.
