We are relocating to Columbia, South Carolina from Southern New Hampshire with three school age children. We are looking for a good place to raise our children with a great school system. Anybody have any good advice? My job is near Route 26 and Browning Road.

Aside from schools, what are your desires in a neighborhood? Urban vs suburban vs rural, walking distance to restaurants, shopping, etc.

Yes - it would be good to know what your other neighborhood/lifestyle preferences are, particularly since your job is fairly centrally located and your commute from much of the Columbia area would be fairly reasonable. Do you have a preferred commute time? You may have 3-4 solid options in terms of broad areas to consider, so more details could narrow it down some more.

Irmo, Lexington, the Richland NorthEast area and even Shandon or West Columbia would all be easy commutes compared to metro Boston.

As others have stated, you preference will be the biggest determiner of which neighborhoods are best for you.

Lexington 1 or Lexington/Richland 5 would both be a convenient location and both have good districts. Lexington is a little more "small town" feel, Irmo/NW Columbia has more to do.

Since you said you're moving to Columbia I assume you mean the city and I recommend the neighborhoods zoned for Dreher and A.C. Flora. I know about assuming.

Browning is in NW Columbia which is the Irmo area. If you want downtown that would be Dreher, but if you want an easier commute and more of a suburb it's Irmo or Lexington.

Considering the traffic patterns, I'm not sure that Irmo or Lexington would be easier commutes. Both have their issues, with 378 and US1 into Lexington and I-26 into Irmo backing up most days. The Dreher area might not be that bad, as you would be travelling against most of the traffic.

(Assuming an I-126 - Huger - Whaley - Assembly - Rosewood route to the south side of Shandon or Rosewood neighborhoods. Of course there is the issue of traffic around USC, Williams Brice Stadium and the Fair Grounds that could throw some nasty monkey wrenches into that commute....)

Browning Rd, Columbia, SC 29210 to Rosewood, West Columbia, SC - Google Maps

Not to be a smarty pants, but 29210 IS THE IRMO AREA (St. Andrews/Bush River Rd). Irmo to Irmo is an easier commute than downtown Columbia to Irmo. Now you are correct when you say downtown to there won't be bad but you can't say leaving the area will make it an easier commute.

Lexington is simply hopping on I-20 to Bush River Rd. If they're off of 378 it's only 3 miles, if it's Hway 1 it's only 6 miles. Oh, and I live in the Irmo area and travel to Lexington 5 days a week so I know the traffic patterns in case you were curious. There is also the possibility of going across the dam.

Sorry Brandon, but Browning Road is around the corner from Dutch Square, which is decidedly not Irmo - it's closer to downtown and with a rush hour commute someone would hit less traffic going from the DT area to Browning Rd than from Irmo to Browning Road. 29212 and 29063 are the Irmo area. 29210 is the Dutch Square/St. Andrews area.
