City officials are working hard to make the Chattahoochee River area of town more appealing. New developments along the river are being built to draw in new crowds to the downtown Columbus area.

We got a personal tour on Thursday of one of those developments, the Eagle and Phenix Mill lofts.

Leah Braxton, vice president of broker services for W.C. Bradley Company real estates, says they want to re-brand the area with conveniences like being within walking distances to restaurants, bars, and the river.

Braxton says they want to be a part of the huge Whitewater attraction that is supposed to bring more than 180,000 visitors to that Riverfront area.

For the first time ever water flowed into the wave shaper, filling up the Georgia channel.

"Of course this is primarily an environmental project but we've spent a lot of money right here to try to create a really special wave feature,' John Turner said.

Whitewater visionary John Turner says that this is only the beginning of the many exciting things to come as the rest of the Eagle & Phenix and City Mills dams come down.

"The river has always been critical to this city, I mean it is the reason we are here and I think it's going to be a really vital economic engine for the future as well too," Turner said.

Though it might be different from what Hunter Katich is used to, he says the rapids prove to be something he looks forward to taking full advantage of.

A nice highrise hotel is a must. This would attract more conventions and keep more kayakers downtown.

I agree! There is a big open space across from TSYS to make that happen.
