Good to see them investing in Columbus. Publix pretty much owns the mid and high end of the market. Winn Dixie is down to 3 metro locations. JTM Piggly Wiggly has cornered the lower end of the market with close to a dozen small locations, but they are facing competition from Walmart and Walmart Neighborhood Markets. There aren't really any other major players in town.

I've always been a bit surprised that another large grocer hasn't entered Columbus yet. It used to be a much more competitive market.

Well, there is Fresh Market for the high-end market. Plus, there's Sam's and an on-the-way BJ's.

And I think overall most markets have moved to just a handful of grocery store players rather than half dozen or more strictly grocery stores that used to be common.

Other than the Phenix City Renfroe's on the horizon, I'm most excited about what grocer is going to enter the Downtown market at The Rapids development.

If Columbus is to have another supermarket, I would project Kroger or Ingle's. Ingle's would have to make strides in order to further expand in Georgia.

I think the Columbus-Muscogee County grocery market is seeing addition through subtraction. Subtracted are losing participants that are closing stores and exiting markets. Supermarket Winn-Dixie is an example. Added is increased market share for remaining participants to gain business.

I think Columbus could easily support some smaller grocers, maybe an Aldi in Midland + something like Ingles to pull up some of the closing Winn Dixie's or maybe another Food Depot on Buena Vista Road.

If Winn Dixie on Veterans closed, I would hope that someone like Kroger would come into that space.

I bet if Kroger puts a foot in this market it would be in Harris Co., 315 near 185 would be a perfect place to put a supermarket with that area's lack of service and past and future growth trends.

And I would be a very happy boy!! I think Dollar General or whatever that place is would be in a world of hurt though!
