Omaha & other cities in Nebraska have some of the nations lowest unemployment rates. Oklahoma is also doing fairly well. If you google something like "Columbus, Ohio unemployment rates" it brings up a list of the unemployment rate up to about a month ago. Ohio & Indiana are pretty bad for jobs unless you work in the medical fields. (Austin Texas is also not bad for jobs)
Ohio's economy is not doing well (in the aggregate.) However, Columbus' metro economy is fairing better than most areas of the US. We have lower job losses and some corp. growth in this recession. Chase is adding 1,200 jobs in three years, for example. However, just like many other places many companies have been cutting back especially the retail corporations headquartered in Columbus.

But compared to Michigan and most midwestern/east coast cities Columbus' economy is one of the shinning spots.

The main difference is that Columbus was incurring economic growth before the recession while most of these other midwestern/east coast regions/cities were already in a recession before the nation economic recession (Cleveland/Detroit/etc.). Columbus is expected to rebound sooner than most other cities. I would say that if you have a job offer in CBUS, then you shouldn't hesitate. Just beware the city is not immune to the recession and there are job losses stacking up all over the country.

I am suprised it took so long for retail to start cutting back. IMO, they should have forseen what was going to happen last year and reacted then.

I think the economy in general is bad. The economy here looks to be fairing a bit better than I thought it would. Would not say it s**** though.

A lot of the economy in Columbus is based on schools and government.

Schools are always steady.
In good time government grows, in bad time government grows faster.

Streetcreed and GeminiGal: The only "fairing" going on in Columbus will be at the end of July and beginning of August, at the Ohio State Fair.
