Charlotte or Atlanta. North Carolina is beautiful, and has everything (oceans, mountains, decent climate, not to mention the research triangle up the road), and Atlanta is an amazing city overall.

I've lived in Charlotte, spent alot of time in Atlanta, and I presently reside in Columbus. Charlotte and Atlanta are both amazing and very progressive cities ... but all of that progress has come with a
high price too. Charlotte can barely keep pace with the excessive growth ( although they're making an honest attempt with their transit system ) and Atlanta is overwhelmingly crowded. Columbus is the kind of city that seems to "sneak up on you" and will surprise you. I would choose Columbus over both Atlanta and Charlotte. Columbus has a fairly robust economy, excellent arts & cultural offerings, and a vast freeway system that enables one to travel around the metro in a reasonable amount of time. Columbus is NOT perfect by any stretch ... I'm a native of Cleveland ... I miss the spacious suburbs, Lake Erie and the museums there, which are second to "none". Columbus does offer an attractive, very clean and well governed city though ... being the state capitol ensures that local projects are accomplished rapidly and there's also a great sense of community pride. Columbus boasts the unique, charming and very beautiful "German Village" area, in addition to the hip and trendy areas of Short North, Victorian Village and Clintonville. I believe that COLUMBUS would be a worthwhile choice.
