Hi,
My husband just accepted a job in Columbus, Ohio. I am wondering which suburb has the best elementary schools, safest neighborhood etc. I am fine living in the city or suburb. I just want a good school! I do like older homes with character. any help is appreciated!

Suburbs with good schools and older housing would include Grandview, Bexley, Upper Arlington and Worthington. Clintonville is Columbus schools, but they're generally on par with better suburban schools, at least elementary-wise. Another option is private options, in which case you can pretty much live anywhere.

BEXLEY, Great schools, good variety of older 1920-1930 homes, very walkable to its downtown, 6-10 minutes from downtown Cbus.

Bexley would be my first choice. Keep in mind with Bexley, it can be a tad islandish. That is slowly being changed as gentrification slowly moves east from downtown Columbus. King-Lincoln-Bronzeville and Olde Towne East have seen heavier and heavier redevelopment as Short North, German Village, Victorian Village and even Italian Village (all inner-urban neighborhoods surrounding downtown) have all passed their peak gentrification moments and are now expensive and "built-out."

Then Upper Arlington South of Lane. Once you start going north of Lane, it becomes newer and newer housing stock age wise. You can still find some character north of Lane too, especially places built just after WWII in the post-war boom.

Grandview is great (basically South of Lane UA bleeds into this city and portions of Columbus proper). But finding a home there can be hard due to its small footprint and thus limited supply. Just be careful when looking that a place you want isn't in Columbus schools despite having been advertised as Grandview Heights (Grandview is a neighboring neighborhood in Columbus proper and Columbus schools, thus the confusion occasionally).

As others mentioned, Columbus Public Schools aren't bad all-around. Some I would be wary of, but the schools (especially elementary) serving NW Columbus (which is basically a suburban extension of the city proper with Columbus municipal services and schools) and Clintonville tend to be the better options. Whetstone and Centennial are decent high schools for being in urban districts, but the two magnet high schools in CPS would be my first choice overall.

Pretty much most of the schools systems around Columbus are pretty good. The 2 exceptions are Columbus City schools and SouthWestern. Avoid those 2. You really can't go wrong in almost any other school system. Keep in mind your property taxes may reflect higher costs.

Luckily Columbus has a lot of nice suburban areas.

Upper Arlington, New Albany, Powell, Dublin, Bexley, Grandview Heights, Worthington, Westerville etc.

In terms of older homes with character check out Upper Arlington or Bexley.
