I noticed when you go deeper into the Midwest, like in Iowa, you see almost no trees. You see acres and acres of farmland. I was told they want to squeeze every last inch out of it for growing crops. Here in Ohio, there are a ton of trees on farms.

Why is this? Does this serve a farming purpose of some kind particular to Ohio?

Trees provide a wind break to prevent wind erosion, they are also habitat for predatory animals to keep crop eating animals in check. Most trees close to a creek are not cleared out either.

Iowa was grassland/prairie before being settled by Europeans. Ohio was >90% forested with most of the remainder being swampy wetlands.

I think 100 years ago or so, Ohio only had about 10% of its original forest cover left, but that number has grown to be over 30% now.

I would be incredibly surprised if Ohio went from 10% forested back up to 30% forested. Seems like whatever the percentage is, it only would be going down. Wooded areas are continuing to be cleared out to make room for farmland in rural areas and for suburban housing developments near cities.

To the OP, Father McKenzie has your answer. Iowa: previously prairie. Ohio: previously forested. We have what remains at this point.

Welp, nevermind. I stand corrected. http://forestry.ohiodnr.gov/history

The conservation movement in the mid 1900's did spawn the regrowth of a lot of forest land in particularly southeastern ohio. Tree cover is indeed back up to 30%.

I guess I was speaking to the area I grew up in west central Ohio which is all flat farm country. I do see less and less trees there.
