OK, both Symantec/Norton and McAfee are the two best out there for PC's; So, which do you prefer?

Best? HAHAHAHA!!! In what respect? If it's using system resources, McAfee is the best at that one.

Norton has improved dramatically with the new versions, but there are other alternatives out there too.

That's like asking whether I'd rather be kicked in the teeth of the nuts. There's really no good answer to that one.

By what measure are they the best AV programs out there?

I made a concerted effort several years ago to rid all the computers in my house (at the time 5 systems) of all Symantec/Norton software. There has been nothing worse in my long history with PCs of eating system resources and messing with the computer registry.

My previous employer was a McAfee corporate customer. It improved to tolerable when I left three years ago. The UI was confusing.

All of my home systems now run free Microsoft Security Essentials. It is unobtrusive, and has caused zero problems.

I see no reason to pay $$ for Symantec or McAfee.

You are kidding aren't you? I don't use or recommend either one.

Is Microsoft Security Essentials really as good as a corporate Norton or McAfee AV program?

As others have said, neither. Both of them are crap, there are far better options both paid and free, Nod32, Kaspersky, MSE, Avast.

I have been using McAfee for about 2 yrs myself, haven't had any issues on my PC's at all. With this thread coming up an a few others I have searched. Is Microsoft Security Essentials with Windows firewall enough protection ? Or would you use them in addition to something else ?

There is no fits all answer to that. Some people can have all the security in the world and still end up infecting their computers, others can run nothing at all and remain virus free. My standard reply, use a reputable AV app backed up with a couple manual scanners like malwarebytes or super antispyware that are run on a regular basis.
