Wing Commander was the premiere "Spaceship shooter". The first to realy sell a lot of copies. It was quite good in it's day.
Has any game aged well, though? Come on now.
A few weeks ago I fired up the co-op "Mr. Do" in MAME. When it first loaded up I thought "man, this game ilooks terrible. These graphics are awful.
How did I pump so many quarters into this?". Well after about a half hour when I died on level 10 just shy of clearing I said "damn it! I can get to 14. I did back in the day! One more game!".
Then I remembered.
Design trumps graphics.
Xwing vs. Tie Fighter came along and embarrassed Wing Commander. That is a game Lucasarts needs to remake for 2011. It shocks me they haven't come out with something similar in this day and age of multi-player.
