Abruptly from CEO of Apple. Wants to remain chairman of the board and a salaried employee.

He writes:

"I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple's brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Steve

Apple’s in good hands with Cook in command.

Steve Jobs is a legend and a hero, but it was bound to happen.

He's far from a hero, people that risk their lives to protect your freedom are heros, people that risk their lives to protect your life are heros, Steve Jobs can't even see the hero list from where he's at.

Very sad. This can't bode well for his health.

My first computer was an Apple 2E and I've never owned a non-Apple machine.

Not a hero, but certainly one of the greatest industrialists. The Thomas Edison of the current if you will.

Is Thomas Edison a hero? What about Alexander Graham Bell or the Wright Brothers? They changed the world and contributed immeasurably to American prestige and prosperity. Great inventors and industrial designers are the corner stone of our economy. Especially today when we don't manufacture like we used to, we still profit from design and innovation.

Not in my book, they accomplished amazing things, but I don't consider what they did heroic.

That seems an unnecessarily limited, and historically inaccurate, definition. There have been many artists, scientists, philanthropists and intellectuals who have been regarded as heroes through out history. The appellation has never been restricted to soldiers and others in physical danger.
