I decided to give my insignia MP3 player a try in my car. For some reason it only sees 255 songs. I have over 1000 songs on my insignia. Anyone know if this is due to the mp3 player or the car stereo and if there is a work around for it?

Probably unique to your car stereo system. What kind of car?

I just saw in the newspaper that Toyota has issued a recall affecting over 250,000 vehicles. Do you think your USB port will be covered?

Are the songs in folders and if so, does the player recognize the folders? I have heard of a limitation where some of them could only see 255 files. I am assuming it is similiar to the 255 file path character limit in Windows. It can't handle anything longer than that.

you're lucky, my Accord won't work with my Walkman MP3 player at all.

You must be joking. A recall is issued only for safety or severe defects. And the news was quite clear - the recall is related to steering in selected cars. No car maker will recall cars because they only play 255 songs.

255 is a significant number in electronics. 2 raised to the 8th power is 256. So if the stereo reserved one byte (8 bits) to count songs 255 is a typical limit.

It could be the MP3 player. Insignia is an off brand. Perhaps via USB it only offers limited support for song selection. The way to test this is to try another USB device.

Pretty sure he was joking.

OP you may want to make sure the MP3 player is in MSC mode. Does this sound familiar? Most MP3 players allow you to switch between MSC or MTP mode.

Try getting a SPEC and wire it using the FPO/THS standard with a NTR. That oughta fix you right up.

Much more limited then using the USB port, not the option I'd go with if I had the choice.
