Why you always back up your files! (laptop, 16GB, server)

Thanksgiving Day I was taking pictures and the camera was acting funny as it saved pictures to the SD Card. Yesterday we had out of town company and I had taken just a few more when it got stuck saving to the card. I finally took the battery out because the camera was non-responsive. Luckily I had a second 16GB card so I popped it in and continued taking pictures.
I checked later and as far as I can tell the old card is toast. I get nothing when I put in the camera or my computer.
Being anal about backups the only pics I lost were a few from Thursday and Friday. Everything else had been copied to the computer and then to the server then to an external drive attached to the server and then to Crashplan.
Right after company left yesterday I copied the files from the new SD card to my laptop. Standard operating procedure for me. Tonight the laptop will back up to the server and I will hand copy the files to a directory on one of the drives on the server as well.
Not sure. When I plug it in the camera and the computer they don't register that it's there. I've got Ontrack, but if the system won't see the card I don't know that it will be able to recover anything. Appreciate the idea.
This is also why I stick to smaller memory cards as opposed to 1 large one to hold everything when it comes to taking pictures. If a card goes bad, I only lose part of what I took, not everything.

2 ADATA 16GB bought in Oct. 2009. I did expect it to last longer. Paid $70. Today It's $40. No surprise there... I will have to buy something now because I always like to have a backup in my camera case.

If I can add something to Tek's advice.....
TEST your backups, make sure they restore once in a while.
Picturing that my system will fail in a couple of years, that my memory is only getting worse I have a separate folder (physical one). In it I have a bootable CD, the backup and any pertinent notes.
I don't want any surprises when the catastrophe strikes....
