When I turned on the computer this morning it announced a fan failure and said to hit F1 to continue. I did and it is working but question is can I leave it on until I get someone out here. Or, as I suspect, is it best to turn it off and leave it off? Will it overheat and cause more damage?
No way for us to tell. If the fan has failed and isn't spinning it could very well overheat and crash. If the fan is still spinning and it's the fan sensor that's bad it'll run just fine. Pop the cover off and see what's going on.
Turning it off is safer, but if you have a little personal fan you can pop the case and blast that fan on the CPU (if that is the one that failed) or funnel it to the power supply if that fan failed. Noisy, but works.

Please, what is the fan sensor? I am quite frustrated. I got that "fan failure" twice and shut down for good. Tonight the computer man came, turned on the computer and go no such notice. The fan was, and is, running fine.

Should have replace the fan anyways since the labor was paid for and it was open.

It's a sensor built in to the fan that the motherboard can read to determine the fans RPM.
Dust gets in and can trigger that. It is a good idea to replace fans if you start having trouble, it can go out at any time and wreck the computer.
