I have a Dell desktop with Vista. I have to start, hit F12, and start computer in previous date mode. Any suggestions on how to correct this problem? I do not know how to isolate problem.
Well, start with F12 and then do some diagnostic check. Check on you firewall, run anti-virus/malware programs, check your HD space, remove unwanted programs, clean your fan(!). See if this helps.
If not, then try system restore, startup repair, check your HD for corrupt files, update your devices and drivers, re-install Vista.
If you don't know how to do it, then bring it to a repair shop, but it won't be cheap.

It's usually a good idea to describe the problem (what's it doing or not doing) before asking for a diagnosis or prognosis.

Get booted up and download a free program. Malwarebytes. Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware download
Then run a full system scan and see if it finds something. We scan with it once a week.
If it finds nothing then malware or back door trojans, etc. can be somewhat eliminated.
All F12 does on a Dell is give you a choice of which device to boot from, hard drive, CD/DVD drive, diagnostics, etc, it in no way gives you any option to change how Windows starts, I think your failing to tell us some other step(s) you're taking.
Do you have the Vista CD that came with the pc? Have you been backing up those things you don't want to lose in case you have to reinstall Vista back to its fresh, original factory image.... like when you first got it?

Do not have CD for Vista. Was installed on Dell computer when I purchased. I have Vista 6.0. IE 9.0.8112. I have Trend Micro Anti Viryus 2013. I also use a software program called System Mechanic to improve my PC performance.
I have run malware scan, virus scan, etc over and over. Computer now starts in normal mode. All programs/software are working. Only problem now is I sometimes get a message: Windows host process Rundll32 has stopped working. I am researching windows/internet to determine how to correct this problem.
