Above is a display of what it looks like. It's the volume icon with the word VOLUME and then a 0.
Does anyone have any idea what this might be? I've run Malware, Spybot and I get nothing but I am concerned with this. MY volume is working fine. It would come & go and now as of yesterday it is quite constant. Any ideas? Thanks.
You should try to track where it comes from. It could be your monitor if it has integrated speakers and you are not using them - since you're saying it shows a volume of 0 and your speakers are working fine.
If you press CTRL-SHFT-ESC, this will bring the task manager window. Clicking on the Applications tab, if that window is from the OS (and not your monitor), you should see it in the list. You can then right-click the entry and select goto process. This will tell you exactly what program (.exe) is showing that volume window. If you have amore recent Windows OS, you can open the folder that contains this exe by right-clicking that process (if not, you can search for it on disk). Using its location (name of the folder) or looking at the properties of that exe file, you can get an idea where it comes from...
Frank - Thanks for the reply. I will try your suggestion but wanted to answer that: no I can't close it - the cursor won't even land on it. You can't move it out of the way either - and it is in the way.

Have fun in your investigation!
OK - It did not show in the task mgr. Since my cursor can't land on this window, I can't get the properties on it. BTW, I'm on Vista.
This is starting to really bother me, especially since it use to come and go and now it's permanent - almost like it's "watching" - sounds crazy but I run and rerun virus programs and they find nothing. I run spyware and it doesn't change it.
Is it possible for you to capture a screen shot of it?
Press Print Scrn button on the keyboard then open MS Paint or Word then right-click and paste the screen capture, then save it so you can attach it to your post.
Have you checked to make sure that thing is not displayed by the monitor itself? Can you check the buttons on the monitor to make sure none of them are stuck?

By George I think you're on to something! I push a button on the monitor and it goes away, but as soon as I release the button, it's back. So, if I make the button stick, it will be gone I really am relieved. You just never know what might be happening. Thank you for responding
It looks like it's coming from your monitor... Otherwise you should be kind of capable on clicking that window and selecting it.
Do you have integrated speakers on your monitor?
If so, they often have up/down volume buttons on them - does the same Volume window appears when you press those?
I have speakers separate from the monitor with a turn knob and when I turn them up or down the image (window) doesn't change. Based on the message below this one, it must be the monitor. Now I have to figure out how to make that button stick I'm just glad "Big Brother" isn't watching or recording anything Never thought I'd start getting paranoid.

Is the button you press to get rid of it either on the far left or far right of the other buttons? That is usually the escape/back button of the monitor so my guess is there actually is another button that is stuck. Frank's suggestion might work or you might be purchasing a new monitor mighty soon. Other option is to get 70% rubbing alcohol, couple of Q tips and clean around the buttons...
