I work from home in an editorial position. For the decade I've worked for my small company, we've been told it's ok to use our work computers for personal purposes. Well, now we've been acquired by a larger company and I'm not comfortable using my work computer for personal stuff so much. And because I'm not near our headquarters, I'd like to have a backup computer for when my main laptop goes down.

Mostly this computer would be used for watching Netflix, word processing (I'm a fiction writer in my spare time), facebooking and stuff like that - generally very light usage. I don't need a lot of storage space as my docs can be in the cloud or on an external hard drive. I might buy Microsoft word for the computer or I might just use the Google word processing program.

Would my needs be served well with an Acer Chromebook? Costco sells them for $250, which is totally doable.

If you're willing to switch to Google Docs and such, a Chromebook might fit you perfectly. There are several different Acer ones. Is there a more specific model number? You can cross shop them all RIGHT HERE:

Thank you!

I love GoogleDocs - I need to figure out if I can make the change entirely and totally drop MS Office. I worry that if I need the computer for business purposes, I could run into problems.

Google chromebook is a great alternative if GoogleDocs does what you need and all you do is consume webcontent. Wife uses it for work (reports) and my son's school uses it. We have the older Acer CB3 white chromebook and quite happy with it. The battery life on it is amazing. I don't have netflix so I cannot say how well it works on ChromeOS.

A used Lenovo T420 can be had for around $150+, and it has an awesome keyboard for typing.

I have an Acer C720P touchscreen Chromebook. I've had it 2.5 years. It's been pretty good and it's easy to use and great to travel with.

For $250 (maybe less) you easily can get an entry level Celeron based Windows laptop. Check Best Buy for their weekly specials if you live close to one or if you prefer online, there are tons of options.
