I recently had to purchase a new mouse pad because they one I had that came with my LAST PC (7-8 years ago) started to wear out. I paid 7 dollars for a mouse pad! and that was the cheapest of the options I had.
I remember when you bought a pizza they'd give you a free mouse pad, I remember stores gave out free pads, businesses gave away free mouse pads.
I'm shocked because I didn't know mouse pads cost that much, I thought at best a fantasy pad would have been about 2 bucks.
And I'm talking about I paid 7 dollars for a regular flat mouse pad.
I remember that . . . a great piece of advertising for the businesses which did it.
I've got a work-around for you. I'm allergic to natural rubber latex and most, if not all, mouse pads have it as a component. I use a piece of plain old cardboard, like you'd take off a note pad. Works great and free!
I would guess mouse pads became a less desirable giveaway item because fewer people use a desktop computer with a mouse at home anymore. They're more likely to use a laptop or a tablet.
Many people I know that have desktops do not even use a mouse pad anymore (myself included). Back when mice had the metal roller balls, a pad was necessary, but most mice today are the laser optical type, so any smooth surface like a desk or table top works just fine.

Or in my case, sitting in a recliner with my laptop using the arm of the recliner as my mouse pad.

Mine doesn't like the glass on the top of my desk. It must need something to grab onto.
I use a sheet of the colored foam that is in the crafts area of the dollar store and have for a while. It does work better if taped down. Mouse pads get filthy and being able to toss and replace is a plus.

Good idea. I'll have to check and see what they're made of . . . hopefully not latex. Synthetics are fine. Thanks!
