I play some older games and even with all known settings and compatibility and that, they tend to occasionally crash out to the desktop.

I don't generally mind - I just go looking for the latest patch or fix or sigh a lot - but what often happens is the audio gets 'jammed' and plays a repetitive sound, some fragment of what was playing at the time of crash.

If there is any way to stop this sound other than rebooting, I can't find it. There MUST be some way to reset the sound card, restart the driver, reset DX, etc. and make the sound stop without a reboot, but nothing I have tried works.

What's really peculiar is that sometimes even a restart or shutdown/restart doesn't cure the problem; I either have to do a hard power cycle or reboot again to clear it.

Anyone? Short form: how do I do a hard reset on the audio under Win10?

Just a crazy suggestion - have you tried forcing the card to play something that uses the same codec? That might overwrite whatever the computer earworm is.

Oh, yeah, I've tried pretty much every fix imaginable:
- Restarting the same game.
- Starting an equivalent game.
- Disabling/re-enabling driver.
- Removing/re-installing sound card at the device level.
- Searching for way to force DX reset.

The noise, usually a hum or wuh-wuh-wuh sort of sound as the broken clip continues to repeat, persists through the new game load or other use. Only a reboot stops it - and sometimes not even then.

Unless there's a seekret trik to forcing DX to reset (I am 94.8% sure it's DX-related), a different sound card would seem to be the only fix left. This is an ASUS Xonar, which although low-end has a pretty good reputation. I'm not exactly pounding it to death, either.

Go to control panel, sound, change the default playback device, then change it back. That should stop it.

Nope. Have tried all variations of that.

The problem appears to be at the hardware level - the crash actually jams the hardware sound subsystem. Nothing further to do with the software, OS or drivers.

It's a real PITA, as my system is stable as a rock in every other way, even running lots of very broad-shouldered graphics, video and design software. It's a few older games that crash - reportedly due to DX version bugs - and completely nuke the sound card in the process.

Many games talk directly to the hardware and bypass the OS. It sounds like this is your issue. There may be no fix, no support for older games with newer hardware, that's for sure. You may have to live with it or get an older computer or better yet an older video card that runs your older games better.

I'm pretty sure the older of the two is still new enough to use the DX interface; the newer one certainly does. I know I have had to update/retro-configure the DX version for both. (I'm not talking about ancient PC bypass-the-OS tech here.) But I will look into what tech info is available.

What kind of audio card you got?
I had some similar troubles with old creative live 5.1 with W7
Fixed with alternative drivers from Daniel.

No, I have two or three older cards and external boxes in the bin, but I don't have the patience to use anything that's (1) so cheap and (2) a perpetual headache due to driver and age issues.

The ASUS mobo had 7.1 sound, but the sound subsystem was damaged by a bad connection, so I disabled it and put in an ASUS Xonar card. Low-end, but high ratings and more than adequate for my basic needs of gaming and 5.1 sound editing. I don't know of any issues with it or its chipset, and drivers are up to date.

Xonar is good card and modern even for W10

Xonar and Windows 10 compatibility

Windows 10 (multiple versions) possible issues and fixes:

  • Microphone not working – Check this guide. (thanks Shane)
  • Audio crashes – If you have “Dolby Atmos for Headphone” app installed you should remove it and replace it with the updated “Dolby Access” app in order to avoid audiosvr process stack overflow errors that are crashing the audio subsystem. (thanks Chris Leipold)
  • Popping and cracking sounds – If you have a AMD graphics card, try disabling AMD High Definition Audio Device from Device Manager. Possible to try the same steps for Nvidia HD Audio Device for Nvidia cards. (thanks Marc)
  • BSOD’s after system wakeup from sleep – Try UNi Xonar v1.71.1 driver. (thanks Kalle)
