I think your idea of having a shop put it in a new case and pull data off it is the way to go, though.

Back when this "died", I would turn the power on, and it would just be dead, no response of any type. Would that indicate that the data is gone, or maybe not? I assumed it was inaccessible after that point, but reading on this thread makes me wonder if that is the case.

If the power supply died the data on the disk will probably still be good and if you put it in a new case and it spins up you may be good. I think it is worth a shot.
