I tried it Harry to see what it looked like.. it took at least 30 sec. to connect.. so don't expect it to connect immediately.

OK - did the ping. Most of them (bank, land's end, jet blue, etc.) came back as "request timed out." Some (google, jcpenney) did show me a time (less than 100ms).

When I did the port 443 test, it came back as fine. We don't have a router anyway. We get our connection directly through the modem.

Thanks for all these suggestions though. They're great!

Are you using a firewall?

Have you emptied your cache? Ccleaner is a good program for this. Check filehippo.com

OK, thought that would be it. Darn. Time to try downloading Mozilla Firefox and testing to see if there is an IE issue. Also, if you don't have a virgin hosts file, rename the hosts file to hostsold and try again. Unlikely, but possible.

Sorry I didn't answer you, LBSer. I tried your modem suggestion a few days ago at the recommendation of my ISP (Time Warner) with no results. In fact, after being on the phone with them for 35 minutes, we hung up with no resolution. They don't seem to know what the issue is either.

Oh, and I don't have a firewall and I did empty my cache. I downloaded Ccleaner today.

Major no-no with an always on high-speed connection. XP or Vista?

Anti-virus, anti-spyware, etc installed?

My husband corrected me - we have the Windows XP firewall. We use AVG anti-virus.

After you get this problem resolved I would recommend adding something like ZoneAlarm Free. The MS Firewall is a joke for incoming protection.

What version of AVG? If you don't have V8 you should upgrade.

Download AVG Free Edition 8.0.100 - FileHippo.com

Run any updates to it and then scan using the AV and AS modules. If you have malware or some other piece of garbage causing problems this should remove it.

You can also use Adware and Spybot.

Download Ad-Aware 2008 7.1.0.8 - FileHippo.com
Download Spybot Search & Destroy 1.5.2 - FileHippo.com

Use Spybot 1.5.2 not the beta.
