I have Webroot anti-spyware and anti-virus, and they had a free download for a firewall, which I downloaded. Windows also has a firewall. Do I keep both in place, or get rid of the Windows one, since I signed with Webroot for three years.

You should be fine using both.

You can remove the windows firewall if you wish. Sometimes the two firewalls will conflict and cause issues, sometimes they wont.

If you have issues reaching the net, I'd try disabling the windows firewall and go from there.

Webroot = junk

The Windows firewall is fine but a NAT router is 10x better.

Back to answering the question that was asked: While it may nor be a huge issue, as mentioned earlier, I'd recommend turning off the Windows Firewall. Several other products perform better, and turning it off now will avoid a frustrating day in the future when something doesn't work and you're struggling to figure out why. That's my recommendation.

I beg to differ. I use it and have had absolutely NO problems with intrusions of any kind.

Yes, it's not a good idea to rely on an application firewall alone. Make sure whatever device you use that is your gateway to the internet has a firewall installed on it. (Like your dsl modem for example)

Its not that it allows bad stuff through, its that in my experience 3rd party firewalls are all overly chatty, annoying, slow the computer down, and just cause more trouble than they're worth.

Oh. Well then, in that case I'd have to agree with you. Webroot CAN be a bit chatty and it's annoying at times to be bombarded with all those alerts.

Zone Alarm free edition is the best software firewall that I have used. Mainly very valuable to stop outgoing connections though. +1 on NAT btw.
