Or is it as worthless a metric as the clock speed of the processor, as a result of the Von Neumann bottleneck on the motherboard?

For those die hard gamers that want to squeeze every bit of speed and every FPS out of their machine it does, along wih CPU overclocking, the bench marks prove both produce results.

The particular architecture of the GPU (how many shader pipelines, DirectX/OpenGL support, etc.) matters more than core clock speed, but core speed does indeed make a difference.

If you overclock the GPU core, it is best to also overclock the video RAM by a proportional amount.

If your building a game PC the graphics card is more important than the CPU. Spend the money on the graphics and buy a dual core, not a quad core.
